I think Biden can win, should win but it’s a toss up right now that’s gonna come down to Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and the big 3 Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The rest of the states are locks Biden has 226 electoral votes locked, Trump has 180 locked. He mentioned RFK, RFK is only gotten on the ballot in 9 states and his polling hasn’t just dropped it’s cratered. He’s a non factor. This is gonna be a close race that’s gonna come down to a few hundred thousand voters in a few states in particular Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. I have to say that I don't agree with Zeihan about anything. The cold war with the USSR was purely to keep the US war manufacturing machine going at full tilt. US arms manufacturers made fortunes during WWII and wanted to keep the good times rolling. And they did. To this day, even when the USSR no longer exists, US arms manufacturers have continued to operate at full scale for the past eight decades. The assinine Ukraine situation is just an extension of the idiotic cold war with the USSR. At least, back in the day, the US government could gaslight everybody with the "Commies want to take over the world". Now, they are not even Commies. And, there is absolutely nothing to indicate that Russia wants to take over the world. That's America's job. Putin has tried to explain, to deaf ears in the West, that Russia has been consistently invaded from the west in recent history starting with Napoleon, WWI, WWII with Hitler and now the US and NATO and that Ukraine is a buffer that they cannot allow to be filled by US and NATO weapons and military. Similar to the US not wanting Russian missiles on our doorstep in Cuba. Seems reasonable enough, but not to the US government. We may end up going to nuclear war over absolutely NOTHING. Globalization wasn't even a thought at the end of WWII when Zeihan says it was part of US global strategy. It only started to be even a though in the Seventies when standardization of containers and the cargo ships and ports to use them came into being. And globalization really didn't take off until the nineties when American unions blocking it had been crushed by Reagan/First Bush first with the implementation of NAFTA and then with the treasonous movement of all American manufacturing to China in order for US multinationals to make a quick dirty buck on low Chinese wages, low Chinese taxes and the ability to pollute with impunity turning China into a sewer. The population decline is the classic example of the tail wagging the dog. Zeihan rues that people are not churning out kids to keep the economy going as lower demand will cause capitalism to collapse. i.e. we need to change our lives radically in order to keep the economy going. The economy is there to serve humanity not the other way around. We need some basic changes to the economic system to be implemented to have the economy serve humanity as it should be. First of all, the world economy can't grow forever. It is a finite planet. So an investment based economic system has to end sometime. And, if you don't need growth, why have an investment based economic system anyway. You need a sustainability based economic system. An economic system that is flexible enough to be viable without growth. Obviously things have to change for that to happen. But change we must and there is no reason why the change has to be catastrophic. Especially because you will need to produce less as time goes on, not more. And, besides, we are way over populated already and the earth can't survive humans growing at exponential levels forever. Trump's supporters are NOT batsh*t crazy. He doesn't even understand the basic Trump dynamic in the US. There are a hundred million Trump supporters, the MAGAs, who are out there because they have been economically disenfranchised from the American dream by globalization. This is not a lunatic fringe movement, this is a white working class movement that has lost the economic class war in America. In 1980, pre Reagan, America was great for the white working class. They had good paying union manufacturing jobs, they owned their own home, they owned their own car, they had good health care, they had good pensions, they could afford to send their kids to college, they could afford to have the wife stay home and properly raise the familty, they had savings and weren't buried in a mountain of debt. 30% of American workers were unionized in 1980. By the time the first Bush left office in 1992, that number was down to 10% and with the unions so weakened that Democrats Clinton/Gore resorted to vying with the Republicans for their rich donors in order to run their campaign, American politics had radically changed. The 99% were no longer represented by either party. Now only the 1% were represented by both parties. And the first order of business was to globalize. Anyway, the MAGAs are the white ones who lost their good paying jobs and are now oxy and fentanyl addicts and who have lost everything they had when America was Great for them. These folks chose Trump to destroy the current US political system - and they ain't ever voting for Biden or any Democrat. Or any conservative Republican for that matter. They want Trump to burn it all down - they figure a wannabe fascist dictator can't hurt them any worse than American Democracy already has - and they are correct. And Americans don't vote for third parties, most of the time they can't, anyway, and RFK junior can't even get into the National debate so he's an afterthought. Zeihan is correct about the China economy collapsing. For a zillion reasons, the Chinese economy has been going downhill since they decided to raise taxes on foreign companies in 2008 from 10% to 25% to match their tax rate on local companies. It has been one misstep after another since then. moving off capitalism and more into socialism and the ridiculous building boom to try to prop up a flagging economy for over a decade. The disastrous Belt and Road, the building of ghost cities to house twenty million people who will never move there to bullet trains and bridges to nowhere. All of this huge expense borrowed from Chinese banks that doesn't have a prayer of any of it being paid off. Chinese banks are reeling and the Yuan/RMB and going to have to take massive hits or all of these banks are going to fail and the Chinese economy along with them. By the way, the US isn't really rebuilding it's infrastructure. It is just moving it's globalization to other venues like India, Mexico and Viet Nam. Nobody, including Trump, has any intention of making America great again for American workers. Not when there is cheap labor and lower taxes anywhere outside of the US. That being said, there will be an uptick in US manufacturing for selected industries. Those that are considered critical for the military or strategic independence and those that can be brought back with very little labor requirements. Zeihan is correct that the green substitutes for fossil fuels won't work. Nuclear, as dangerous as human corruption and error can make it, is the best shot at reversing climate change. The stupidest thing the greens have ever done is reject nuclear as a substitute for fossil fuels. Agree with Zeihan, New Zealand is screwed moving forward.
